Degrowth, as an academic field, has gained much popularity and attention in recent years and more and more grounds are covered. However, there’s a noticeable gap in this discussion – not much is said about how the state fits into the picture of making an ecological and socially just transition. Kallis and D’Alissa highlight this gap in “Degrowth and the State.” This project, through the medium of a graphic novel, is here to delve into this issue and start a conversation, looking at how the state could be instrumental in facilitating a degrowth society. This project intends to explore the different concepts, strategies, and proposals on the potential transformative role of the state.

The main aim is to kickstart conversations about how activists and those into prefigurative work can deal with or bypass the state to reach the shared goal of an eco-social transition without sticking to capitalism. This graphic novel can be seen as more of a starting point than a final answer, paving the way for more explorations into this complex relationship.
This project is mainly designed to reach activists, prefigurative practitioners, degrowth advocates, and the people involved in movement building. The idea is to make the conversation accessible and straightforward, making sure everyone can join in and understand the discussion about the state’s role in an eco-social transition.
